Cocoon #1 - 20" x 16" original, acrylic on stretched canvas
As I was improvising with different mediums in the studio, a recurring form that materialized was one that resembled a cocoon. I was drawn to the concept, realizing that certain ideas and knowledge I was encountering about spirituality and the human experience made me feel that this current state of being and plane of perception that we are in is something like a cocoon. I read that butterflies retain memories from their caterpillar days, despite their bodies breaking down into goo and reconstructing into something entirely different... Sometimes I wonder if life is merely a transitional state, where we are unable to physically contact what's outside our perception, but nevertheless feel the light or effects of forces just beyond a spiritual barrier.
